A view of the lake and Fort Erie, from Buffalo Creek,"" (aquatint in colors, 21.11 x 14.2 ins.), E. Walsh, 49th [British] Regt., delint.; engraved by John Bluck, published Jany. 1, 1811 at R. Ackermann's Repository, 101 Strand, [London,] 1811. Walsh, the artist, was surgeon of the 49th Regiment and was stationed near Niagara Falls for several years previous to the War of 1812. This view was taken from the point where Little Buffalo Creek joins the Buffalo River, the artist looking westward across Lake Erie to Fort Erie on the Canadian shore. It is a very artistic production, but too imaginative to be of historical, or topographical importance. A water-color drawing (21.3 x 13.9 ins.) of this view is in the Phelps Stokes Collection of American Historical Prints in the New York Public Library. Whether it is the original drawing from which the engraving was made, or not, has not been detirmined. The fact that the drawing is signed ""W. G. Wells"" (instead of ""E. Walsh) seems to indicate that is is a copy of the engraving. Buffalo's population in 1810 numbered 365, and in 1811 about 500, with less than 100 buildings. It had three taverns, four stores, on school building which served as town hall, a meeting place for all religious denominations and for all public purposes. Buffalo was destroyed Dec. 30, 1813 by the British in the War of 1812, leaving only two buildings standing. Two copies of the original engraving are in the possession of the Buffalo Historical Society.

A view of the port of Buffaloe on Lake Erie,"" (steel engraving, 6.9 x 3.9 ins.), published in 1815, in the August number of ""The Port Folio,"" of Philadelphia, with the statement: ""The prefixed engraving exhibits a correct view, taken on the spot, of the port of Buffaloe, on Lake Erie, at the time of the landing of a part of General Harrison's troops, subsequent to the defeat and capture of General Proctor's army [Oct. 24, 1813], near the Moravian villages, on the river Thames."" [vol. vi, p. 105]. Two months after the sketch was made, or Dec. 30, 1813, Buffalo lay in ashes, destroyed by the British, in the War of 1812. The view was taken from a point on the Terrace, near its intersection with South Cayuga [Pearl] St., looking S.W. over Lake Erie. It shows Little Buffalo creek, Big Buffalo creek, the Peninsula [the Island], and the Canadian shore. Note: This view was re-engraved by Gavil & Duthie, for E.B. O'Callaghan's ""Documentary History of the State of New York,"" Albany, 1849 (vol. ii, p. 1178). This re-engraved plate (7 x 3.8 ins.) is the one usually reproduced and falsely described as ""from the original engraving."" The original Port Folio view engraving (and reproductions faithful to it) may be recognized by the leaflessness of a lower branch of the tree at the extreme right of the view. In the re-engraved plate (and reproductions of it), this branch is fully leaved. Copies of the original are in possession of the Buffalo Public Library and of George Nathan Newman.

Buffalo
View of Buffalo Harbor"" (copper plate engraving, 7.7 x 3.1 ins), made by Sheldon Ball and published in his fourteen paged sketch of ""Buffalo in 1825,"" and additionally interesting as being the first copper plate engraving made in Buffalo. Ball states: ""This view was taken from the Terrace, between Willink Ave. [Main St.] and South Cayuga Street [Pearl St.], near the line between lots no. 30 and 31; the foreground exhibits the confluents of the Canal with the waters of Little Buffalo, and its final termaination iwth the Lake through the medium of Big Buffalo Creek, the Light House, Pier, mouth of the Harbor, and shipping within; Lake Erie, with point Abino (in the province of Upper Canada), on the right distant eleven miles, and sturgeon point, )on the U.S. shore,) on the left, distant about fifteen miles. The distance between the two points may be about sixteen miles."" In the text of the book he states: ""There are at present between 400 and 500 buildings, including dwelling houses, stores, and mechanic's shops; and according to the census taken January last, there were 2412 inhabitants, which is 317 more than the whole town of Buffalo, including Black Rock, contained in the year 1820, according to the census then taken. Black Rock now contains 1039 inhabitants."" Papers left by Henry Lovejoy, prominent Buffalo surveyor, afford the following information. ""The view was taken from the Terrace, near the north entrance to the Market. The Terrace was then a high bank, with the green turf upon it unbroken. The foreground exhibits the Erie Canal, then in an unfinished state, from a Point near Erie street to the Little Buffalo Creek above the Commercial street bridge. At the left is seen the point on which soon afterwards was erected the warehouse occupied by Joy & Webster. The small building at the extreme left stood in Prime street. The next is the old red warehouse occupied by Townsend & Coit, and below it are two small buildings standing in or near the foot of Commercial street. Farther down the harbor we come to a cluster of small buildings then standing on Johnson & Wilkeson's lot. Next (near the middle of the picture) stands the warehouse of Hiram Pratt, later used by Asa B. Meech. The next and last building, on the right, was a small warehouse used by Sheldon Thompson & Co. In the harbor, at the foot of Commercial street, lies the steam brig Superior....The old lighthouse is seen on the south bank of the creek."" [B.H.S.P. vol. XVI, p. 13.] [See City Directory of 1847, pp. 30, 31, for this article.] Copies of the original engraving are in possession of the Buffalo Public Library, the Buffalo Historical Society, and George Nathan Newman.

Buffalo
Buffalo Harbour from the village,"" (lithograph, 8.3 x 4.1 ins.), published in Cadwallader D. Colden's ""Memoir.. Presented .. At the Celebration of the Completion of the New York Canals,"" New York: 1825, p. 295, a work noteworthy as containing the earliest examples of illustrations reproduced in the United States by lithography. This view is one of a series of two pertaining to Buffalo [Nos. 4 and 6 of this collection], appearing in this volume, which was published by the State to commemorate the completion of the Erie Canal. The sketch was made, and transferred to stone, by George Catlin, the noted authority on Indian ways and customs, and bears the imprint, ""Catlin del.,"" ""Imbert's Lith.""; while on p. 370 of the work occurs the statement: ""This was drawn from nature and lithographed by Geo. Catlin, Esq.,"" with the added description: ""From the terrace the view extends over the canal, terminating in the basin, the creek, and harbor, the shipping the lighthouse, with the long breakwater projecting into Lake Erie; on the horizon, in the Center, is the expanse of the Lake; on the right of the picture is the American, and on the left of it the Canada shores."" The buildings on the river bank in this view may readily be identified with those appearing in No. 3 of this collection (see the comments given there). The sign-post at the left is that of the Mansion House, at the corner of Main and Crow [Exchange] Streets. The streets appearing are Main St., Canal [Commercial] St., and the Terrace. The population of Buffalo in 1825 was 2412 and buildings numbered from 400 to 500. Two different lithographic plates of this view were made for this work. The earlier lithograph, by Catlin, may be distinguished from the later plate,--made by another hand and found in later copies of the work,--by the Indians standing about the sign-post at the left and sitting on the adjacent bank, by the primitive type of the shipping and of conveyance protrayed, and by the many figures of pedestrians portrayed. A copy of the work with the earlier plate is in the possession of the Buffalo Public Library, the Buffalo Historical Society, and George Nathan Newman.

Buffalo
Buffalo Harbour from the village," (lithograph, 8.7 x 6.3 ins.). For some reason, Catlin's plate bearing this title and made for Colden's "Canal Memoir" (see No. 4], proved unsatisfactory and a new plate was made, printings from which appear in later copies of the work. This is the plate under condsideration here. The plate was larger and bore the imprint, "Imbert's Lithography," and omits Catlin's name. The statement on p. 370 of the work regarding Catlin, remains unchanged. It is an attempt to improve on Catlin's plate; but the "improvements," although less violent than in the companion plate [see No. 7], in that they are departures from Catlin's sketch which was "drawn from nature," detract from the historical value of the view. The plate can no longer be considered an original source. It is marked by the omission of the Indians and of all pedestrians save one, and by the more modern style of equipage and type of shipping depicted. A copy of the volume with the later plate is in possession of the Buffalo Public Library, the Grosvenor Library, and the Buffalo Historical Society. Ball, in his "Buffalo in 1825," enumberates the shipping which belonged to the port of Buffalo in that year, as: one Steam Boat, [the "Superior"], one Hermophrodite Brig, eight Schooners, one Sloop, four transportation boats, and a Steam Ferry Boat which will commence running on the first of July next, between this place and Fort Erie; and is calculated to make a daily trip to Chippewa, on the Canada side, during the present summer. Besides there are number water craft of small dimensions. There are upward of sixty sail of good substantial and safe vessels, owned upon the Lake, forty-two of which, entered this port last summer; and there were 286 arrivals and an equal number of clearances. The steamboat "Superior," mentioned above, was of 346 tons burden, and was buildt during the winter of 1821-22, on the bank of Buffalo river, above Main St. It was the first steamboat buildt in Buffalo Village and made a tirp to Detroit "every eight or nine days." It took the place of the "Walk-in-the-Water," the first steamboat on the Lake, which was built at Black Rock in 1818 and suffered shipwreck on the shore, about a mile from the Buffalo lighthouse, Nov. 1, 1821. Her machinery found a place in the "Superior.

Buffalo
Buffalo form the Light House,"" (lithograph, 8.7 x 6.3 ins.). The same reason that led to the substitution of a plate by another hand, for Catlin's original plate of ""Buffalo Harbour from the Village"" [see No. 5 of this collection], occasioned the making of this second plate of the other original Catlin view, viz. ""Buffalo from the Light House."" The plate omits Catlin's name, bearing only the imprint ""Imbert's Lithography."" The statement on p. 369 of the work however remains unchanged. This second plate is larger and undoubtedly the work of the same modernizing artist who attempted to ""improve"" the other Catlin plate. In his attempt at betterment he has presented us (to say nothing of the cosmopolitan style of dress of the men and of the woman depicted) with the type of sea-going craft with which he was familiar in New York City. Most of the figures of pedestrians have been omitted. Besides, he has so enlarged the buildings in the background--constituting the major part of Buffalo-- that the true perspective has been lost and the village appears a mere cluster of houses on the bluff beyond the canal bank [the Terrace]. The historical and topographical value of the picture is inversely in proportion to these improvements. Catlin's plate ""drawn from nature"", although far less artistic, is greatly to be preferred as the picture of Buffalo in 1825. A copy of the volume with the later plate is in the possession of the Buffalo Public Library, the Grosvenor Library, and the Buffalo Historical Society.

North West view of Buffalo, N. Y.,"" (woodcut, 6.6 x 3.3 ins.). This view appears in the ""Historical Collections of the State of New York,"" p. 149, published by John W. Barber and Henry Howe, New York: 1841. As the work refers to the building activities in Buffalo in the year 1835, quotes from the ""New York Mirror"", vol. 14 [1837], and gives statistics drawn from the Buffalo City Directory of 1835-37,--several years previous to publication. In regard to the reliability of the illustrations given, the editors state [p. 4]: ""The numerous engravings were, with few exceptions, copied from drawings taken on the spot by the compilers of the work. In these engravings, our principal object was to give faithful reproductions, rather than picturesqe views, or beautiful specimens of the art."" The view was taken from some point in Niagara St. Near Niagara Square, looking down Niagara St. towards Main St. The population of Buffalo in 1835 was 15,661 and in 1840, 18,213. The vessels belonging to the port of Buffalo in 1835 were: 13 steamboats, 3 brigs, 51 schooners and sloops, a total of 67 in all, with a tonnage of 7,500 tons. The following year (1836) there were 35 steamboats on Lake Erie, registered in the different ports. The volume containing the woodcut is not rare and may be found in the libraries and in many private collections.

The ""Webster Buildings"" (colored lithograph, 7.5 x 5.25 ins.) is one of five views [see 13 b, c, d, e, f] printed about 1838, on one folio sheet, the artist and the lithographer not being named. The block is on the east side of Main St., extending north from Perry store fronts. It consists of seventeen brick stores, all alike, four stories high. It was built in 1835 by Benjamin Rathbun in ninety days' time, for Joy & Webster, at a cost of over $100,000. The stores were numbered 1-17 from Perry St. and were occupied mostly by wholesale business and jobbing houses. The block is typical of the inartistic character of the buildings of that period. The first story may be described as of stone, in that the front consisted of 52 plain, square, stone pillars (monoliths), each fifteen ins. in width and so placed that each store was faced by two whole and two half pillars. These pillars (now mostly supplanted by iron posts) were surmounted by simple square Doric capitals, which were topped by the wide stone entablature with its plain square cornice, masuring 24 + 7 ins. in all. The three upper stories are of brick, plain laid, each story having a row of fifty-one rectangular window openings, capped by plain, wide stone lintels, set flush. The roof is low gabled, sloping away from the street. It seems incredible, but is a fact, that lower Main St. is still (1932) largely encumbered by survivals of this Webster Block (17 stores), 66-68, 70, 76-78 (rebuilt to two stories), 80-82, 90-92-94, 95-97 (five stories high), 98-100, 102-104 (pillars of brick), 122-124, 126-128, 129-131 (pillars of brick), 132-134, 133, 139-141 (upper stories faced with stone), 143, 145-147, 151, 161-163, 165-169 (the Mansion House, six stories, with first story of stone block), 181, 183 (south part of the old LeCouteulx Block, with ""JLX BLOCK"" of the lettering still remaining), 178-180-182 184 (stone pillars mostly replaced by iron columns). The building to the left of the Webster Block, in the view, was Huff's Hotel, or the ""Travelers' Home,"" kept in the 'thirties by H.D. and W.D. Huff. It was an extensive two story frame building. Samuel M. Welch in his ""Recollections of Buffalo Fifty Years Since"" (Buffalo: 1891), says: ""During the great traveling era on the canal and lakes in the 'thirties, this tavern was usualy crammed with guests. The trunks were piled in front of the house daily, 'mountain high;' literally and without exaggeration, the writer having frequently seen in front of that holel a pile of trunks ten to fifteen feet high, thirty feet long and from three to four trunks wide."" This building has long since disappeared. Two copies of the original lithograph are in the possession of the Buffalo Historical Socty.

Terrace Market and Liberty Pole"" (colored lithograph, 7.5 x 5.25 ins.) is one of five views [see 13 b, c, d, e, f] printed about 1838, on one folio sheet, the artist and the lithographer not being mentioned. At the left of the view is the Mansion House at the corner of Main and Exchange Sts., of which Erastus Hathaway was proprietor in 1838. Across Main St., in the center of the Terrace, is the Terrace Market, built in 1836 at a cost of $17,000. The basement and first floor were of stone, the other story of brick. The building was 130 x 30 ft., with a wing on either side and a square tower in which was installed a fire alarm bell in October 1837. The basement of the building was devoted to stalls for the sale of frusts, vegetables and fish. The first floor was given over to the sale of meats. Offices of City officials and spacious Council Chamber were located on the second floor. The building was torn down in 1853. Spaulding's Exchange did not supplant the old buildings at the S.E. corner of Main St. and the Terrace [Martin Daley's corner] until 1845. The Birkhead Buildings, around the corner in Commercial St. 9present nos. 107-113), said to have been built in 1836, evidently were not in existence when the view was made. The building in the center of the view, 18-26 Terrace, now occupied by Howard H. Baker & Co., ship chandlers, early served as a hotel (""Temperance House""), and also as a theater. At the right of the view is the corner store of the block of buildings erected for Bennett and Williams under lease from Jonathan Sidway in 1832, which later reverted to the lessor, thereafter to be known as the Sidway Buildings. The store took the place of the ""Old Stone Tavern."" Two copies of the original lithograph are in the possession of the Buffalo Historical Society.

St. Paul's Episcopal Church, at the corner of Main and Church Sts., was a small frame building, erected in 1819, at a cost of $5,000. It was painted light blue. It served the congregation until 1851, when it was sold to the German Untied Evangelical St. Peter's Society and moved to Genesee and Hickory Sts., where it endured until 1878. The Rev. William Shelton was rector of St. Paul's from 1828 to his death in 1881. The first Presbyterian Church, at the corner of Main and Niagara Sts., was erected in 1827, at a cost of $17,500 and was torn down in 1890 to make way for the Erie County Savings Bank building. The Rev. Asa T. Hopkins was the pastor from 1836 to 1848. At the left of the view, at the corner of Main and Erie Sts., is the building built in 1836 for the Bank of Buffalo, at a cost of $30,000. The first ""American Hotel"" (colored lithograph, 7.5 x 5.25 ins.) is one of five views [see 13 b, c, d, e, f] printed about 1838, on one folio sheet, the artist and the lithographer not being named. This ""most famous hotel west of New York"" in its day, was built in 1835-36 by Benjamin Rathbun, for Col. Alanson Palmer, and was opened in September 1836, under the management of Lewis L. Hoges. It was a cut gray stone building, five stories high, with a columnar cupola. It included a ball and concert hall, which was the center of the social activities of the elite of the city. The building was destroyed by fire March 10, 1850. It was replaced by the second American Hotel building, which in turn succumbed to the flames Jan. 25, 1865. At the right of the view is the Eagle Tavern, or Rathbun's Hotel. It was built in 1825 by Benjamin Rathbun and conducted by him until 1833, when Isaac R. Harrington succeeded him. Gabriel Kimball and Benj. F. Haddock were the proprietors in 1838. The main structure was of brick, three stories high, with a two story annex extending north to Court St. (about 100 ft.). Here Lafayette was entertained, June 4, 1825 and a public dinner, presided over by Genl. Peter B. Porter, was given in his honor. The tavern was blown up by gunpowder at the time of the burning of the second American Hotel (Jan. 25, 1865) to prevent the spread of the flames. Thus perished a famous hostelry. The gilded eagle that graced the tavern's entrance is in the collection of the Buffalo Historical Society,- the sole memento of departed glory. The old numbering in the Eagle-Court block was 290 to 334. At the extreme left of the view, appears one of the ""kremlin Buildings,"" a block of stores extending from Eagle to Niagara St. (old numbering 266 to 288 Main St.), built by Rathbun in 1832 after fire had destroyed the earlier buildings Dec. 13, 1831, for Judge William Peacock of Mayville, buildings which mostly survive, but little improved, to this day. Two copies of the original lithograph are in the possession of the Buffalo Historical Society.
